The emergence of the new COVID variant BA.2.86, now nicknamed ‘Pirola,’ has sparked a wave of apprehension among medical experts globally. This unease stems from the variant’s remarkable array of mutations within its spike protein, suggesting heightened evasiveness compared to its predecessors. Despite a relatively low number of reported cases to date, experts are closely monitoring Pirola, as its distinct characteristics raise concerns in the realm of global public health.

Pirola, with over 35 mutations in its spike protein alone, has already been identified in various countries, including the United States, Denmark, Israel, and the UK. The World Health Organization (WHO) has placed Pirola under the category of ‘variant under monitoring’ due to the extensive mutation profile of the virus.

What Sets BA.2.86 Apart?

One distinctive feature of the BA.2.86 variant is its potential to evade immunity conferred by current vaccines and prior infections, owing to the multitude of mutations it carries. Additionally, the origin of Pirola appears intriguing, as it may have evolved from the Omicron BA.2 variant, which circulated more than a year ago, in early 2022. Pirola boasts 30 spike protein mutations distinct from the current dominant variant, Omicron XBB.15, which could bolster its immune-evasive capabilities. However, limited data and cases hamper conclusive findings regarding its ancestry.

Symptoms and Severity of Pirola

BA.2.86, commonly associated with symptoms resembling a mild cold or flu-like illness, typically presents with fever, coughing, fatigue, headaches, body aches, loss of appetite, conjunctivitis, rashes, diarrhea, and breathing difficulties. Assessing whether Pirola is more severe than other variants remains uncertain due to the restricted sample size available for analysis. Nevertheless, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) suggests that the BA.2.86 variant might exhibit a higher likelihood of infecting vaccinated individuals compared to other COVID-19 sub-lineages, raising concerns about its potential to cause a surge in infections.

Effectiveness of Current Vaccines Against Pirola

Given the scarcity of Pirola cases, comprehensively studying the variant’s interaction with existing vaccines proves challenging. Nevertheless, it is anticipated that current vaccines will continue to offer some level of protection against the disease and its severe forms. Expert virologist Jesse Bloom points out that while BA.2.86 may possess certain evasion advantages against current vaccines, broader immune responses triggered by vaccination and prior infection should provide protection against severe illness, even in the presence of highly mutated variants like Pirola. Vaccine manufacturers are likely to adapt their vaccines to address emerging variants, underscoring the importance of following local health authorities’ guidance on COVID-19 vaccinations.

Impact on India and Mitigation Measures

In the context of India, health experts have reassured the public that there is currently no need for panic. BA.2.86 has not yet been detected in India, and the nation’s hybrid immunity, coupled with the longstanding presence of the Omicron variant, is expected to minimize Pirola’s impact on the country.

Treatment and Prevention

As for treatment and prevention of Pirola infection, standard COVID-19 protocols apply, including the use of appropriate masks, adherence to hygiene practices, maintaining physical distancing, and following the guidance of healthcare professionals when infected. Keeping up with COVID-19 vaccines and boosters is strongly recommended to bolster protection against evolving variants.
